Master of Public Health

The Department of Public Health, at the University of Liverpool, is one of the largest of its kind in the UK. This degree is one of the only online MPH programmes in the UK which is fully accredited by APHEA (Agency for Public Health Education Accreditation).

 

1、Key Factors

To prepare students with the expertise and knowledge needed to address constantly changing public health concerns, this MPH degree takes on a global and multidisciplinary approach to provide you with an insight into public health best practices.

 

The curriculum will offer a solid foundation on key topics within the public health realm and how the principles and practice can be achieved within a global context including global health promotion, health inequalities, management and leadership, and methodologies from an ethical, social, and economic standpoint.

 

You will be driven to critically appraise the complexities of current health and social systems from various perspectives and evaluate options for strategy development and programme interventions, through which you will apply knowledge to real-world scenarios and chart the unexplored territories.

 

Upon completion, you will have developed key public health skills through enhanced learning and varied assessment activities on which you can immediately reflect in your current roles. You will be able to progress your career in related areas, apply the knowledge and skills you have gained into effect in a variety of settings including research, practice, and policy. You will also be eligible for senior roles in public health research and practice across various sectors, such as health organisations, governmental organisations, charities, and NGOs.

 

This programme is also available as a postgraduate certificate and a postgraduate diploma.

3、Course Structure

This programme consists of the following modules. In order to achieve the full accreditation, you are required to complete 180 credits.

  • Integrated Research in Public Health: Epidemiology and Qualitative Methods (20 credits)
  • Leading and Managing Health Systems (10 credits)
  • Monitoring and Evaluation of Systems and Programmes (10 credits)
  • Health Inequalities: Integrating Public Health Practice (10 credits)

Core module (one from):

  • Applied Epidemiological Research for Public Health; or (15 credits)
  • Applied Qualitative Research for Public Health (15 credits)

Optional modules (two from):

  • Health Protection (10 credits)
  • Preventing and Managing Communicable Diseases (10 credits)
  • Managing Crises and Disasters (10 credits)

4、Learning and assessments

Teaching methods

You will take part in an innovative online learning environment, which includes a range of interesting and thought-provoking exercises. Core information is developed by subject-leading experts in the field and closely aligned with both industry and academic best practice, underpinned by rigorous theoretical and practical topics, examples and cases. Throughout your study journey, you will learn through interactive individual activities, case studies, group tasks and discussion boards; these will be primarily asynchronous, but opportunities for synchronous interaction will be provided.

 

Assessment method

Assessment is by coursework only – no examinations required. Instead, a diverse range of assessments are used throughout the programme designed to mirror circumstances that students may experience within a professional context. This ensures you will be provided with a range of opportunities to show evidence of your learning.

5、Virtual learning environment (VLE)

The Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is at the centre of your online study experience. It is the platform where you can find your study timetable, view interactive lecturecasts, exchange knowledge with others in discussion forums, access resources and e-library, and submit your assignments. You can learn on demand, study at any time, on any device, from anywhere with an internet connection. There is a study skills hub to help you improve and maintain your academic skills, from planning your assignments, understanding academic integrity, and referencing, to using the online library and improving your time management.

6、Entry Requirement

  • A master’s or bachelor’s in medicine, equivalent to a UK degree, coupled with at least one year experience in a public health related field; or
  • A minimum of a 2:1 class degree in a public health related discipline, equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree, coupled with two years professional experience in a public health related field; or
  • A minimum of a 2:1 class degree in a non-public health related discipline, equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree, coupled with two years of professional experience in a public health related field.

Applicants should also have:

 

A minimum GCSE grade C or equivalent in English language and mathematics.

 

All applicants must provide evidence that they have an English language ability equivalent to an IELTS (academic) score of 6.5 (overall) and 7.0 (reading and writing).

 

If you don’t have an IELTS or equivalent certificate, you can take a free online English test to assess your proficiency.

7、Fee and Funding

Full tuition fee: £16,065*
This fee is fully inclusive of all costs, including all teaching materials, core textbooks, assessments and resits.

Full payment discount

If you choose to pay the full tuition fee upfront, you will receive an extra 5% discount.

Regional Scholarship
A Regional Scholarship of 5% is available for students based in Hong Kong for the 2023/24 academic year.

^An English proficiency assessment known as KITE which serves as a substitute for the IELTS examination, is available.

^Individuals without a formal degree may still be eligible to apply by submitting a reference letter that validates their subject area expertise or relevant experiences. This could include individuals with extensive management or field experience over a significant number of years.
